Understand fluorescent and retroreflective materials, EN ISO 20471 classes and key selection criteria.

Visibility is essential wherever vehicles and moving equipment operate. EN ISO 20471 specifies performance requirements for the colour, retroreflection, areas and placement of materials used in high-visibility clothing. The right class depends on the workplace.

Fluorescent and retroreflective are different

Fluorescent background material improves conspicuity in daylight. Retroreflective elements return incident light toward its source and aid visibility in low light. Both have distinct functions, and proper placement matters.

Classes 1, 2 and 3

The standard groups garments into three classes based on minimum areas of visible materials. Class 3 has the highest minimum area requirements. Risk assessment must also consider traffic speed, lighting, weather and the nature of the task.

Garment design and combinations

Vests, jackets and trousers cover different body areas. Combining garments does not automatically raise the performance class; check the manufacturer’s declared combinations and certification. Do not cover the reflective areas with other equipment.

Care affects visibility

Dirt, abrasion, damage and washing beyond the manufacturer’s guidance can reduce performance. A reflective stripe by itself does not prove EN ISO 20471 compliance.

Selection checklist

  • Assess moving traffic and machinery.
  • Consider day, night and poor weather.
  • Check the EN ISO 20471 label and class.
  • Verify certified garment combinations.
  • Review fit, care and replacement instructions.
